Clavaseptin 250mg – Amoxicillin & Clavulanic Acid Palatable Tablets for Dogs

Clavaseptin 250mg is a palatable oral antibiotic tablet manufactured by Vetoquinol, containing 200mg amoxicillin (as trihydrate) and 50mg clavulanic acid (as potassium salt). Also known by equivalent brand names Clavamox, Synulox, and Clavacillin, Clavaseptin is one of the most widely prescribed veterinary antibiotics worldwide.

The 250mg strength is designed for medium-sized dogs (10–40kg), providing convenient one-tablet dosing for dogs in the most common weight ranges without needing multiple smaller tablets.

How It Works

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic penicillin that kills bacteria by disrupting cell wall synthesis. However, many bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that destroy amoxicillin before it can work. Clavulanic acid anticipates this defence mechanism by irreversibly blocking beta-lactamase enzymes, restoring the bacteria’s sensitivity to amoxicillin. This combination provides reliable coverage against both susceptible and resistant organisms.

Indications for Dogs

Clavaseptin 250mg is indicated for treatment of bacterial infections caused by organisms susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid:

  • Periodontal and dental infections: Gingivitis, periodontitis — caused by Pasteurella spp., Streptococcus spp., Escherichia coli
  • Skin infections: Deep and superficial pyoderma, wound infections
  • Soft tissue infections: Abscesses, anal sacculitis
  • Urinary tract infections: Cystitis and other UTIs
  • Respiratory infections: Upper and lower respiratory tract
  • Gastrointestinal infections: Enteritis caused by susceptible bacteria

Also used in cats for skin infections (wounds and abscesses) caused by Pasteurella spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and E. coli.

Dosage and Administration

Administer orally at 12.5mg combined active substances per kg body weight, twice daily.

For cats and small dogs under 10kg, use Clavaseptin 62.5mg Tablets. For large dogs over 40kg, use Clavaseptin 500mg Tablets.

In severe infections, the dose may be doubled to 25mg/kg twice daily under veterinary guidance.

Treatment duration:

  • Periodontal infections: 7 days
  • Standard skin/soft tissue infections: 7–14 days

  • Respiratory infections: 8–10 days

Tablets are palatable and can be given directly by mouth, from hand, or crushed and mixed with a small amount of food.

Key Benefits

  • Convenient strength for medium dogs: One 250mg tablet replaces four 62.5mg tablets for a 20kg dog
  • Palatable and scored: Easy to administer and split for accurate weight-based dosing
  • Broad-spectrum with beta-lactamase protection: Effective against resistant bacteria that single-agent amoxicillin cannot treat
  • Versatile: Covers dental, skin, urinary, respiratory, and GI infections in a single product
  • Proven track record: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is one of the most studied and prescribed antibiotic combinations in veterinary medicine

Side Effects

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea may occur — treatment can often continue depending on severity
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (allergic skin reactions, rarely anaphylaxis) — discontinue immediately and seek veterinary advice

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics
  • Do not use in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, horses, or ruminants
  • Do not use in animals with severe kidney dysfunction (anuria/oliguria)
  • Do not use where resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is confirmed
  • Use with caution in animals with impaired liver or kidney function

Drug Interactions

Avoid simultaneous use with bacteriostatic antibiotics (macrolides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol). Cross-reactivity with other penicillins is possible. Penicillins may enhance the effect of aminoglycosides.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety not established during pregnancy and lactation. Lab studies in rats showed no teratogenic effects. Use only based on veterinary risk/benefit assessment.
