Clavaseptin 500mg – Amoxicillin & Clavulanic Acid Palatable Tablets for Large Dogs

Clavaseptin 500mg is a palatable oral antibiotic tablet manufactured by Vetoquinol, containing 400mg amoxicillin (as trihydrate) and 100mg clavulanic acid (as potassium salt). Also known by equivalent brand names Clavamox, Synulox, and Clavacillin, Clavaseptin is prescribed worldwide for treating a wide range of bacterial infections.

The 500mg strength is the highest-dose Clavaseptin tablet, designed for large and giant breed dogs (30kg and above). One tablet treats a 40kg dog, making it the most practical and cost-effective choice for larger breeds like German Shepherds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Great Danes.

How It Works

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic penicillin that kills bacteria by preventing them from building their cell walls. Many bacteria have evolved to produce beta-lactamase enzymes that break down amoxicillin before it can act. Clavulanic acid permanently disables these beta-lactamase enzymes, allowing amoxicillin to work effectively even against resistant strains. This makes Clavaseptin significantly more effective than amoxicillin alone.

Indications for Dogs

Clavaseptin 500mg is indicated for bacterial infections caused by organisms susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid:

  • Periodontal and dental infections: Gingivitis, periodontitis, dental abscesses — caused by Pasteurella spp., Streptococcus spp., Escherichia coli
  • Skin infections: Deep and superficial pyoderma, hot spots, wound infections — especially common in large breed dogs
  • Soft tissue infections: Abscesses, anal sacculitis, post-surgical infections
  • Urinary tract infections: Cystitis and recurrent UTIs
  • Respiratory infections: Kennel cough complications, pneumonia, upper and lower respiratory tract infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections: Enteritis caused by susceptible bacteria

Dosage and Administration

Administer orally at 12.5mg combined active substances per kg body weight, twice daily.

Key Benefits

  • Highest strength available: One tablet provides 500mg of combined antibiotic power for large breed dogs
  • Cost-effective for large dogs: Fewer tablets needed per course compared to lower-strength options
  • Palatable and scored: Easy to give to large dogs who are often difficult to medicate — most accept from hand
  • Beta-lactamase protection: Effective against resistant bacteria that amoxicillin alone cannot treat
  • Proven combination: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid has decades of clinical use and evidence in veterinary medicine

Side Effects

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea may occur — treatment can often continue depending on severity and veterinary assessment
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (allergic skin reactions, rarely anaphylaxis) — discontinue immediately and consult your veterinarian

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics
  • Do not use in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, horses, or ruminants
  • Do not use in animals with severe kidney dysfunction (anuria/oliguria)
  • Do not use where resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is confirmed
  • Use with caution in animals with impaired liver or kidney function — veterinary risk/benefit assessment required

Drug Interactions

Avoid simultaneous use with bacteriostatic antibiotics (macrolides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol). Cross-reactivity with other penicillins is possible. Penicillins may enhance the effect of aminoglycosides.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety not established during pregnancy and lactation. Lab studies in rats showed no teratogenic, foetotoxic, or maternotoxic effects. Use only based on veterinary risk/benefit assessment.
