What Is Veraflox 120mg?

Veraflox 120mg contains pradofloxacin 120mg per tablet, a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic developed by Bayer Animal Health (now Elanco) for dogs. The 120mg strength is designed for larger dogs weighing 30–80 kg, where the 60mg tablet would require an impractical number of tablets per dose. One or two 120mg tablets provide the correct 3.0–4.5 mg/kg once-daily dose across the full range of large-breed body weights.

Veraflox 120mg is a dogs-only product. For cats, the correct Veraflox formulation is the Veraflox Oral Suspension 2.5%.

Why Pradofloxacin Over Other Fluoroquinolones?

Pradofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone with two key advantages over older agents like enrofloxacin or marbofloxacin:

  • Anaerobic spectrum: Unlike most fluoroquinolones, pradofloxacin has clinically relevant activity against anaerobic bacteria such as Porphyromonas spp. and Prevotella spp. — the dominant pathogens in periodontal and bite-wound infections. This is why Veraflox is approved as an adjunct treatment for canine periodontal disease.
  • Dual-target mechanism: Pradofloxacin simultaneously inhibits both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, requiring bacteria to develop mutations in two separate genes to become resistant. This reduces the probability of resistance emerging during treatment.

Target Bacteria

  • Staphylococcus intermedius group (including S. pseudintermedius) — the leading cause of canine pyoderma and wound infections
  • Escherichia coli — primary cause of acute canine UTI
  • Porphyromonas spp. and Prevotella spp. — key anaerobic periodontal pathogens

Indications for Use in Dogs

  • Surface pyoderma (superficial bacterial skin infection)
  • Deep pyoderma (furunculosis, cellulitis)
  • Wound infections (traumatic and surgical wounds)
  • Acute urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Severe periodontal disease (adjunct to mechanical/surgical treatment — not a substitute for dental cleaning)

Dosage for Large Dogs — Veraflox 120mg Tablets

The recommended dose is 3.0 mg/kg body weight once daily (range 3.0–4.5 mg/kg). The 120mg tablet is appropriate for large dogs 30 kg and above.

Dog Body Weight (kg) Veraflox 120mg Tablets Dose Range (mg/kg)
30–40 kg 1 tablet 3.0–4.0 mg/kg
40–60 kg 1.5 tablets 3.0–4.5 mg/kg
60–80 kg 2 tablets 3.0–4.0 mg/kg

For dogs 15–30 kg, see Veraflox 60mg tablets. For dogs under 15 kg, use Veraflox 15mg tablets.

Duration of Treatment by Indication

Indication Duration
Surface pyoderma 14–21 days
Deep pyoderma 14–35 days
Wound infections 7 days
Acute urinary tract infection 7–21 days
Severe periodontal disease (adjunct) 7 days

If no improvement is observed within 3–4 days, re-evaluate the diagnosis and consider alternative therapy or culture and sensitivity testing.

Administration

Give once daily by mouth. Tablets are scored and can be halved for the 1.5-tablet doses. Can be given with or without food. Avoid simultaneous administration of dairy products, antacids, or iron/zinc supplements.

Contraindications

  • Growing dogs: Do not use in dogs under 12 months (most breeds) or under 18 months (giant breeds). Fluoroquinolones cause arthropathy (cartilage damage) in developing joints.
  • Existing cartilage lesions: Do not use — may worsen the condition
  • Epilepsy or CNS disorders: Do not use — fluoroquinolones lower the seizure threshold
  • Fluoroquinolone hypersensitivity: Do not use
  • Pregnant or breeding animals: Avoid unless benefit outweighs risk

Drug Interactions

Drug / Substance Interaction Management
Antacids (Mg, Ca, Al); dairy; iron/zinc supplements Chelation reduces absorption Separate dosing by ≥2 hours
Sucralfate Binds pradofloxacin in gut Separate by ≥2 hours
Theophylline Pradofloxacin raises theophylline levels Monitor and reduce theophylline dose if needed
Cyclosporine Increased risk of toxicity Avoid concurrent use
Oral anticoagulants (warfarin) Enhanced anticoagulant effect Monitor closely
Cimetidine Inhibits pradofloxacin metabolism Use with caution

Side Effects

  • Mild GI signs (vomiting, reduced appetite) — most common; usually transient
  • CNS stimulation / seizures — rare; significant risk only in predisposed animals
  • Cartilage/joint effects — at adult therapeutic doses in healthy joints, rare; risk is substantially higher in young growing dogs

Storage

  • Store below 25°C, away from light and moisture
  • Keep in original blister packaging until administration

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Veraflox strength should I use for my large dog?

Veraflox 120mg is the appropriate choice for dogs 30–80 kg. One tablet covers 30–40 kg dogs, 1.5 tablets covers 40–60 kg, and 2 tablets covers 60–80 kg. Using 60mg tablets in large dogs would require 2–3 tablets per dose, which is more impractical and more expensive than using the 120mg strength.

Can Veraflox 120mg tablets be used in cats?

No. Veraflox tablets (all strengths) are for dogs only. Pradofloxacin has been shown to cause bone marrow suppression in dogs at high doses, and dog-strength tablet dosing is completely inappropriate for cats. For cats, the only appropriate pradofloxacin product is the Veraflox Oral Suspension 2.5%.

How long does Veraflox treatment take for deep pyoderma?

Deep pyoderma (including furunculosis) typically requires 14–35 days of treatment. Surface pyoderma requires 14–21 days. These are longer courses than many other antibiotics because pyoderma treatment requires the full resolution of deep tissue infection, not just surface clearing. Stopping treatment early risks relapse, particularly with deep pyoderma.
