What is Zodon 25 mg/ml Oral Solution?

Zodon 25 mg/ml oral solution is a veterinary antibiotic belonging to the lincosamide class. Its active ingredient is clindamycin — a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against a range of gram-positive bacteria and anaerobes. Each ml of Zodon 25 mg/ml contains 25 mg of clindamycin (equivalent to 27.15 mg clindamycin hydrochloride). The solution is clear and amber-coloured, flavoured for easier administration.

Zodon is produced by Ceva Santé Animale, France — one of the world’s leading veterinary pharmaceutical companies.

Active Ingredient & Composition

  • Active substance: Clindamycin – 25 mg/ml (as clindamycin hydrochloride 27.15 mg)
  • Excipient: Ethanol 96% (E1510) – 72 mg/ml

Clindamycin after oral administration is almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. After a dose of 11 mg/kg, peak plasma concentrations of approximately 8 µg/ml are reached within one hour. The elimination half-life is approximately 4 hours. Around 70% is excreted in faeces and 30% in urine.

  • Hamsters
  • Guinea pigs
  • Rabbits
  • Chinchillas
  • Horses
  • Ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats)

Also do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any of the excipients.

Adverse Reactions

Vomiting and diarrhoea have been reported very rarely. In case of prolonged therapy (one month or more), periodic monitoring of liver and renal function and blood counts is recommended.

Drug Interactions

Important interactions to be aware of when using Zodon:

  • Chloramphenicol / Macrolides (e.g. erythromycin): Do not use simultaneously — antagonistic effects may occur
  • Aminoglycosides (e.g. gentamicin): Simultaneous use carries a risk of acute renal failure
  • Cyclosporin: Clindamycin may reduce plasma levels of this immunosuppressant
  • Neuromuscular blocking agents: Clindamycin has intrinsic neuromuscular blocking activity — use with caution
  • Antacids (aluminium salts, kaolin): May reduce absorption — administer at least 2 hours before clindamycin
