What Is Procox Oral Suspension?

Procox is an oral antiparasitic suspension from Elanco (formerly Bayer Animal Health) containing emodepside 0.9mg/ml and toltrazuril 18mg/ml in a 7.5ml bottle with a precision dosing syringe. It is specifically designed to treat mixed parasitic infections in dogs — where both intestinal roundworms and coccidia are present simultaneously — in a single treatment. This is the standard situation in many puppies, particularly those from kennels, breeders, or shelters.

Procox can be used from 2 weeks of age in puppies weighing at least 0.4 kg, making it the go-to choice for breeders and rescue operations dealing with coccidia and worm co-infections in very young puppies.

The Problem Procox Solves

Intestinal roundworm infections and coccidiosis (Isospora) frequently occur together in puppies and young dogs. Roundworm larvae are commonly passed from mother to puppies before or during birth (transplacental transmission) and through milk. Coccidia are ubiquitous in the environment of kennels and breeding facilities. A puppy with both infections would normally require two separate products on two different treatment schedules. Procox combines both treatments in a single dose, simplifying management for breeders and reducing the handling stress on young puppies.

How It Works

Emodepside is a depsipeptide that targets presynaptic latrophilin receptors in the nematode nervous system, causing flaccid paralysis and death. Its mechanism is completely different from ivermectin, fenbendazole, and other common dewormers, making it effective against worms that may be resistant to other drug classes.

Toltrazuril is a triazinone coccidiocide that acts against all intracellular developmental stages of Isospora coccidia — both asexual (merogony) and sexual (gametogony) reproduction phases. It causes oxidative destruction of the parasite at every stage, not just one. Clinical trials show it reduces oocyst shedding by 90–100% in treated dogs.

Target Parasites

Roundworms (Nematodes):

  • Toxocara canis — mature adults, immature adults, and L4 larvae
  • Uncinaria stenocephala — Northern hookworm (mature adults)
  • Ancylostoma caninum — hookworm (mature adults)
  • Trichuris vulpis — whipworm (mature adults)

Coccidia:

  • Isospora ohioensis complex
  • Isospora canis

Not effective against: tapeworms (cestodes), Giardia, or other protozoa. For tapeworms, use a praziquantel-containing product.

Dosage Table

Dose: 0.5 ml per kg body weight (= 0.45 mg emodepside/kg + 9 mg toltrazuril/kg). Single administration. Shake well before use.

Puppy/Dog Weight (kg) Volume of Procox (ml)
0.4 kg (minimum) 0.2 ml
0.6 kg 0.3 ml
0.8 kg 0.4 ml
1.0 kg 0.5 ml
1.5 kg 0.75 ml
2.0 kg 1.0 ml
3.0 kg 1.5 ml
4.0 kg 2.0 ml
5.0 kg 2.5 ml
6.0 kg 3.0 ml
7.0 kg 3.5 ml
8.0 kg 4.0 ml
9.0 kg 4.5 ml
10.0 kg 5.0 ml
Over 10 kg 0.5 ml per kg body weight

The 7.5ml bottle provides a full treatment dose for dogs up to 15 kg. For nematode infestations, treatment can be repeated after 14 days if required.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in puppies under 2 weeks old or weighing under 0.4 kg
  • Do not use in pregnant bitches (safety not established)
  • Do not use in the first 2 weeks of lactation
  • Do not use in dogs with hypersensitivity to emodepside or toltrazuril
  • Collie breeds and MDR1-positive dogs: use with caution. Emodepside is a P-glycoprotein substrate. Dogs carrying the MDR1 (-/-) mutation (Rough Collie, Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Australian Shepherd, and related breeds) may show lower tolerance. Genetic testing is recommended before use.

Important Notes for Breeders & Kennel Owners

  • Treat all exposed dogs in a group simultaneously to prevent re-infection
  • Remove faeces from the environment within 12 hours — Isospora oocysts sporulate (become infectious) within 12–24 hours in warm conditions. Prompt faeces removal is the single most effective environmental control measure
  • Oocysts are resistant to most standard disinfectants — steam cleaning is more effective
  • Procox reduces oocyst shedding but does not resolve existing diarrhoea in already-symptomatic animals — these animals may require additional supportive care

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can puppies start Procox?

From 2 weeks of age, provided the puppy weighs at least 0.4 kg. The supplied dosing syringe graduates in 0.1 ml increments, allowing precise dosing for very small puppies.

Does a 7.5ml bottle treat one dog or multiple?

It depends on body weight. The 7.5ml bottle provides a full treatment dose for a dog up to 15 kg (0.5 ml/kg × 15 kg = 7.5 ml). For smaller dogs, the remaining suspension should be discarded after use as a new syringe is required each time.

Is Procox safe for Collies?

Caution is advised. Collies and related breeds carrying the MDR1 mutation (-/-) show lower tolerance to emodepside due to reduced P-glycoprotein function at the blood-brain barrier. It is recommended to test MDR1 status before using emodepside products in susceptible breeds. Consult your vet for suitable alternatives if the dog tests positive for MDR1 (-/-).
