Clavaseptin 62.5mg – Amoxicillin & Clavulanic Acid Palatable Tablets for Dogs and Cats

Clavaseptin 62.5mg is a palatable oral antibiotic tablet manufactured by Vetoquinol, containing 50mg amoxicillin (as trihydrate) and 12.5mg clavulanic acid (as potassium salt). Also known by its equivalent brand names Clavamox, Synulox, and Clavacillin, Clavaseptin is one of the most widely prescribed veterinary antibiotics for treating bacterial infections in cats and small dogs.

The 62.5mg strength is specifically designed for cats and small dogs up to 10kg, allowing precise dosing with easy-to-split scored tablets.

How It Works

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic penicillin with rapid bactericidal action against many gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp.) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pasteurella spp., Salmonella), including beta-lactamase-producing strains.

Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from destruction by resistant bacteria. Together, this combination provides reliable broad-spectrum coverage that single-agent amoxicillin alone cannot achieve.

Indications

Dogs:

  • Treatment or adjunctive treatment of periodontal infections (gingivitis, dental disease) caused by Pasteurella spp., Streptococcus spp., and Escherichia coli
  • Skin infections including deep and superficial pyoderma
  • Soft tissue infections (abscesses, anal sacculitis)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Respiratory infections (upper and lower)
  • Gastrointestinal infections (enteritis)

Cats:

  • Treatment of skin infections including wounds and abscesses caused by Pasteurella spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Escherichia coli
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections

Dosage and Administration

Administer orally at a dose of 12.5mg combined active substances per kg body weight, twice daily (equivalent to 10mg amoxicillin + 2.5mg clavulanic acid per kg).

Clavaseptin 62.5mg Dosing Chart

Animal Weight Tablets per Dose Frequency
1.0–2.5 kg (2.2–5.5 lbs) ½ tablet Twice daily
2.6–5.0 kg (5.7–11 lbs) 1 tablet Twice daily
5.1–7.5 kg (11.2–16.5 lbs) 1½ tablets Twice daily
7.6–10.0 kg (16.7–22 lbs) 2 tablets Twice daily

For animals over 10kg, use Clavaseptin 250mg for more convenient dosing.

In severe infections, the dose may be doubled to 25mg/kg twice daily.

Treatment duration:

  • Periodontal infections in dogs: 7 days
  • Skin infections in cats: 7–14 days (reassess after 7 days)
  • Chronic or deep skin infections: up to 28 days

Key Benefits

  • Palatable tablet: Flavoured for easy administration — most pets accept from hand or mixed with food
  • Scored for splitting: Tablets divide easily for accurate dosing in small animals
  • Ideal for cats and small dogs: Lower strength avoids overdosing in lighter animals
  • Broad-spectrum: Effective against common gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens including beta-lactamase producers
  • Trusted manufacturer: Produced by Vetoquinol, a leading global veterinary pharmaceutical company

Side Effects

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea may occur
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (allergic skin reactions, rarely anaphylaxis) are possible — discontinue and seek veterinary advice if observed
  • At 3x the recommended dose for 28 days: decreased cholesterol and vomiting in cats, diarrhoea in dogs

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics
  • Do not use in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, or chinchillas
  • Do not use in horses or ruminants
  • Do not use in animals with severe kidney dysfunction (anuria/oliguria)
  • Do not use where resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is confirmed

Drug Interactions

Avoid simultaneous use with bacteriostatic antibiotics (macrolides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol) as they may reduce amoxicillin’s efficacy. Cross-reactivity with other penicillins is possible.

Storage

Store below 25°C in the original package. Use any remaining half-tablet within 16 hours. Supplied as 1 blister of 10 tablets.
