Catosal 10% is an injectable metabolic stimulant and tonic manufactured by Bayer Animal Health. Each ml contains two synergistic active ingredients: butaphosphan 100 mg (an organic phosphorus compound) and cyanocobalamin 0.05 mg (vitamin B12). Together, they form a clear pink solution that supports cellular energy metabolism, stimulates protein and fat metabolism, promotes glycogen formation, enhances immune resistance, and supports recovery in sick, weakened, or nutritionally depleted animals.
Catosal is suitable for a wide range of species: cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, fur animals and poultry. It is one of the most widely used metabolic support injections in veterinary medicine worldwide.
One of its most significant advantages: zero-day withdrawal period for meat, milk, and eggs — making it safe to use in food-producing animals at any stage without requiring the animal to be withheld from slaughter or milking.
Butaphosphan is an organic phosphorus compound that provides 17.3 mg of bioavailable phosphorus per ml. Unlike inorganic phosphate supplements, butaphosphan is rapidly absorbed and utilised at the cellular level. Phosphorus is critical for ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis — the primary energy currency of every cell. By replenishing phosphorus availability, butaphosphan directly stimulates cellular energy production, supports gluconeogenesis and glycogen formation, and improves muscle contractility and neural function. It is particularly effective in cases of metabolic stress, postpartum disease, and hypocalcemia (milk fever), where cellular energy demand is acutely elevated.
Cyanocobalamin is the injectable form of vitamin B12, essential for red blood cell production (haematopoiesis), myelin sheath synthesis, and the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. B12 deficiency leads to anaemia, neurological symptoms, poor growth, and reproductive failure. When administered by injection, cyanocobalamin achieves plasma levels far superior to oral supplementation, making Catosal particularly valuable in animals with digestive conditions limiting enteral absorption.
Together, butaphosphan and cyanocobalamin have a synergistic effect: phosphorus activates metabolic pathways while B12 supports the cellular machinery needed to carry out those processes — increasing each other’s clinical effectiveness.
Give by subcutaneous (SC), intramuscular (IM), or intravenous (IV) injection. For cattle, IV is preferred. IV for cattle; IV, IM or SC for all other species. Volumes over 10 ml should be split across multiple injection sites.
| Species | Acute Dose | Chronic / Maintenance Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cattle (adult) | 10–25 ml IV | 5–12.5 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Calves | 5–12 ml IV | 2.5–6 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Horses | 10–25 ml IV/IM/SC | 5–12.5 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Foals | 5–12 ml IV/IM/SC | 2.5–6 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Pigs | 2.5–10 ml IM/SC | 1.25–5 ml | Daily or every 5–14 days |
| Piglets | 1–2.5 ml IM/SC | 0.5–1.25 ml | Daily or every 5–14 days |
| Sheep & Goats | 2.5–8 ml IM/SC | 1.25–4 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Lambs & Kids | 1.5–2.5 ml IM/SC | 0.75–1.25 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Dogs | 0.5–5 ml IV/IM/SC | 0.25–2.5 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Cats & fur animals | 0.5–2.5 ml IV/IM/SC | 0.25–1.25 ml | Daily or every 1–2 weeks |
| Poultry (drinking water) | Broilers/layers: 2–3 ml/litre | Chicks/young: 1–1.5 ml/litre | As required |
For chronic conditions and use as a general tonic in healthy animals, administer half the acute dose. Repeat after 5–14 days if necessary.
Catosal is compatible with antibiotic treatment — it does not interfere with antibacterial drugs and can be used concurrently. It can also be mixed with glucose solution or calcium solutions for combination metabolic support therapy, making it a valuable adjunct in drip therapy for downer cows, post-surgical recovery, and intensive care situations.

Catosal has a zero-day withdrawal period for meat, milk and eggs. This makes it one of the very few injectable veterinary products that can be safely administered to dairy cows, milking ewes, and laying hens without any requirement to discard milk, hold back slaughter, or withdraw eggs from sale.
Butaphosphan is an organic phosphorus compound that directly fuels cellular ATP energy production — something plain B12 injections don’t provide. Catosal combines both: butaphosphan for immediate energy metabolism support, and cyanocobalamin (B12) for blood cell production and protein metabolism. The two are synergistic — making Catosal significantly more effective for metabolic recovery than either component alone.
In dogs, Catosal is used for recovery from illness, surgery or prolonged disease, secondary anaemia, metabolic disorders, exhaustion, paresis, and tetanic syndromes. It is also used to boost performance and resistance to disease in working dogs, and to stimulate growth and development in puppies. The recommended dose for dogs is 0.5–5 ml depending on size, given SC, IM or IV.
Adult cattle receive 10–25 ml by intravenous injection for acute conditions. Calves receive 5–12 ml IV. For chronic conditions or general tonic use, halve these doses. Repeat daily in acute cases, or every 1–2 weeks as a stimulant. Catosal is particularly effective in cattle for milk fever adjunct therapy, ketosis recovery, retained placenta, and fertility stimulation.
Yes. Catosal has a zero-day milk withdrawal period, meaning treated cows can continue to be milked for human consumption immediately after administration. This is one of its key practical advantages for dairy farmers.
Yes. Catosal is fully compatible with antibiotic treatment and can be administered concurrently. It is frequently used as a supportive metabolic adjunct alongside antibiotics in cases of respiratory disease, mastitis, metritis, and postpartum infections in cattle.
Initial metabolic effects from butaphosphan are typically seen within 24–72 hours of injection. For anaemia and B12-related deficiencies, improvement in red blood cell parameters may take several days to weeks depending on the severity. In animals with acute metabolic crises (e.g. downer cows, ketosis), marked improvement is often visible within 12–24 hours when used alongside appropriate supportive therapy.
Once the vial is opened, Catosal should be used within 28 days. The unopened shelf life is 5 years. Store at 5–25°C and do not freeze.
